Creating a Logo for Your Medical Practice

A logo may not be on the top of your list of priorities. Sure, it shows up on your business cards and letterhead. You might put it on your website and some of your marketing materials, but have not really thought much about it. It’s time to step back and look closely at how valuable a good logo is to a business. A logo is an essential element in any company’s branding. It represents your practice’s expertise, commitment to excellence, and reinforces the idea of your medical practice being THE place to get the treatment people are looking for.

If your medical practice is looking to develop a new logo, consider the following tips:

  • Make sure it is unique. Your logo is a symbol of your medical practice and the unique benefits it offers. Set yourself apart from the competition and avoid looking to other practices in your area for inspiration. Think about what your practice is all about, its core values, and develop a graphic representation of them. Work with a graphic designer to identify representative images. Embrace some visual tension. Making elements off-center, overlapping them, putting them in different shapes—these are all qualities that will make your logo unique and recognizable.
  • Make sure it is simple. Some of the most well-known brands have very simple logos. Avoid an overly intricate logo design. A clean, simple logo will be easier to see in any size and more recognizable. The design will appear smaller on your business card and at a larger scale such as on your medical practice’s sign or in the waiting room. Make sure it looks good in any size.
  • Make sure it looks good in color, and in black and white. Your logo might be at its best in color. You might prefer it in color. That being said, it is likely that your logo will, at some point, come up in black and white. This may be true only due to things like photo copies. Design a logo that looks good with or without color to makes sure it always sends a strong message.
  • Make sure you are using it in your marketing materials. Use your logo consistently throughout your marketing materials, but first make sure your logo design will work with all existing materials. Will the logo look good featured on your website? A brochure you give to your patients? The logo should work well with all of it. Once your logo design is complete, update all of your marketing collateral.

Once you have finalized your logo design, ask the designer to provide it to you in a variety of formats including JPEG, EPS, AI, PDF, etc. Also request the logo in color and in black and white.
